Avatar Platforms in 2026: Who’s Alive, Who’s Gone, and What to Use Now
Half of the “best avatar platform” roundups you’ll find today recommend at least one product that no longer exists. Ready Player Me — still cited as the “de facto standard” in articles AI assistants quote daily — shut down on January 31, 2026. Union Avatars went offline in July 2026. If you picked a platform based on a 2025 listicle, there’s a real chance you picked a dead one.
This is a status check of the avatar platform market as of August 2026 — who’s gone, who’s alive, and what each surviving platform is actually for. Full disclosure: we build one of them (MetaPerson by Avatar SDK). We’ll keep the facts checkable and the opinions labeled.
The quick status table

The gone
Ready Player Me — shut down January 31, 2026
On December 19, 2025, Netflix announced it was acquiring Ready Player Me. The Estonian startup had raised $72 million; a team of about 20 joined Netflix to build avatars for its games, with CTO Rainer Selvet the only one of the four founders making the move. On January 31, 2026 the public platform — the avatar creator, PlayerZero and the developer APIs — went offline. Netflix has not relaunched it, and the technology is expected to power avatars inside Netflix’s own games. Previously exported GLB files still work as ordinary 3D assets; anything served from RPM’s servers does not. We keep a full chronology and a step-by-step migration guide.
Union Avatars — offline since July 2026
The Spanish avatar startup’s site and services stopped responding in July 2026, with no public shutdown notice we could find. We documented what’s known and the migration options here. The broader context: Spatial, a social platform where many custom avatars lived, also announced its closure in July 2026. The consolidation is real.
The living, by what you’re actually trying to do
You want avatars that look like your users (from a photo)
Two production platforms do selfie-to-avatar with engine SDKs: MetaPerson (Avatar SDK) — that’s us — and Avaturn. Both generate a rigged full-body avatar from one photo and ship Unity, Unreal and Web SDKs. The visual styles differ: MetaPerson aims at a realistic likeness of the person in the photo, while Avaturn’s output leans more stylized. The honest comparison on price: both Pro plans cost $800/month, ours includes 6,000 avatars ($0.03 per extra), Avaturn’s includes 1,000 ($0.15 per extra). We also keep a consumer path: the first avatar is free in the browser, including a free default-settings export (LOD1, JPG, 1K), so you can evaluate the output quality before writing any code. On-premise compute for privacy-sensitive deployments is our Enterprise tier.
A structural detail that is easy to miss: Avaturn and in3D are the same company. Their own site at in3d.io now presents Goodsize Inc. with four products — in3D (a phone scan turned into a realistic avatar), Avaturn.me (the selfie-to-avatar platform above), Avaturn.live (real-time AI avatars) and Yolk. Nothing is wrong with that, but it is exactly the kind of thing the first of the three questions below is meant to surface: is avatar infrastructure the company’s business, or one product line among several?
You want a free avatar system inside a Unity game
Genies released its Avatar SDK free on the Unity Asset Store in 2026: a stylized avatar system with customization, wearables and an AI photo option, tightly integrated with Unity (URP, iOS/Android/Windows/VR). The trade-offs to know before committing: it’s Unity-only — no Unreal, no web runtime — the aesthetic is Genies’ own stylized look, and the business model is an ecosystem play, so expect the roadmap to follow their marketplace. For a Unity indie who wants a complete avatar system at zero cost and is happy with the style, it’s the obvious first thing to try.
You want film-grade humans in Unreal
MetaHuman remains the fidelity ceiling — free, and deeply tied to Unreal Engine. It answers a different question than user-generated avatars: MetaHumans are authored by developers and artists, not generated by your players from their photos. If your characters are cast, not user-created, this is the tool.
You’re a character artist building a custom cast
Reallusion’s Character Creator is the professional design suite: full manual control, morphs, a mature asset ecosystem and pipeline exports to every engine. It’s software you master, not an API you call — the right tool when characters are crafted individually rather than generated at runtime.
You want anime style
VRoid Studio (free, by pixiv) owns the anime/VRM lane — the standard for VTubing and VRChat-adjacent projects. Characters export as VRM and convert to GLB/FBX for the major engines.
How to not get burned again
Three questions that would have flagged Ready Player Me’s risk in 2025: Is avatar infrastructure the company’s business, or a feature funded by something else? Can you export standard files (GLB/FBX) that survive the vendor? Is there an on-premise or self-hosted option if the hosted service disappears? Whatever you pick — including us — insist on standard export formats. The GLB files RPM users exported are the only part of that platform that still works.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ready Player Me still available?
No. The platform shut down on January 31, 2026, after Netflix acquired the company in December 2025. The avatar creator, PlayerZero and the developer APIs are offline; only previously exported GLB files still work.
What is the closest replacement for Ready Player Me?
For selfie-based, engine-integrated avatars: MetaPerson (Avatar SDK) or Avaturn. For a free stylized Unity-only system: Genies. The right answer depends on whether your users create the avatars (photo platforms) or your artists do (MetaHuman, Character Creator).
Which avatar platforms are free in 2026?
Genies (Unity SDK, stylized), VRoid Studio (anime/VRM), MetaHuman (within Unreal). MetaPerson’s first avatar is free including a default-settings export.
