New Hairstyles for Avatar SDK

At Avatar SDK, we create selfie-based lifelike avatars for AR/VR, metaverse, e-commerce and other applications. An important aspect of realistic avatars is hairstyles that are notoriously hard to model. We’d like to share with you one of the research projects that we are working on. We want to be able to automatically create realistic hairstyles. Right now we have  hairstyles generated by a neural network, and we were able to significantly improve their resolution:

Hairstyles old vs new

The new, higher resolution hairstyles are available in our new MetaPerson avatars that you can beta test here https://metaperson.avatarsdk.com. This website features an avatar editor that, besides head and body customization, allows to change hairstyle color or replace a generated hairstyle with a pre-created one.

We want to provide users with a set of pre-created high quality hairstyles that users can choose from if they want to change their appearance. Since we want to create these hairstyles in high volume, we aim to minimize the manual work we do for each asset. So, we created an algorithm that generates a hairstyle automatically. Below is the video of a couple such strand-based hairstyles. We are working now on automatic conversion of strands to stripes which will allow to render them on lower-power platforms. Stay tuned for more news on the new pack of hairstyles!
